Fiber Pr0n & My Angry Wrist

So much has happened this week!

Monday I spent nearly six hours trying to finish up the silk yarn that had been waiting on my wheel for almost a week. Unfortunately, not only did I not finish the silk on Monday, by Tuesday morning my left wrist was hurting so badly I couldn’t reliably carry my one year old daughter. Luckily, I spin with my left hand dominant, but am a righty for all other purposes - so I could still write and eat! (Yay! Food is good!) I had hoped that by Wednesday the pain would stop and my wrist would heal, but no such luck. One wrist brace later, I was able to type without tearing up, but still hurting too much to spin. By Thursday, I was so desperate for something fibery to do, I pulled out the acid dyes… and ended up dyeing almost all of the fiber I had in the house. Friday I took photos of the almost-dry fiber.

By Sunday my wrist had healed up enough that I could spin again. And I did! I finished off that silk, and then plied it with the merino singles that were waiting on the bobbins. I’m still setting the twist on the last of the plies, so no pictures of those just yet. The finished silk and merino skeins have been worth the wait though - I really love how these have turned out! The only problem is, I love them so much that I’m not sure if I can let them go to a new home!

I’ve got to get back to work, sadly - but I’ll leave you with some fiber and yarn pr0n. Happy Monday!

I think of all of those I like the Fireworks the best, it’s the jolt of the unexpected purple set off against the ochre. I’m sorry to hear about the wrist, did you identify what had caused it (different chair, hands not far enough apart for drafting) or did you just overdo it with the six hours? It’s a valuable lesson learned but a pity that you learned it the hard way. Ouch.

Fireworks is definitely one of my favorites too!

About the wrist - I think it was a combination of too much time spinning, combined with locking my thumb for so long. I’m going to have to work on not pinching the fibers so hard while waiting for twist to build up, and take a break from spinning small silk singles; working with silk is getting easier, but not as easy to control as wool. Not to mention just taking breaks every now and then - no more than an hour in one sitting!

Ouch is right, but like you said - valuable lesson learned! I’m sure we all have one or two of those, no? ;)
