I spent a good chunk of yesterday in the shop, Favorite Things, where I’ll be selling my yarn. Originally, I went there to set up my display and put in the bits of yarn I had for sale in the display. I ended up staying for nearly four hours, chatting and laughing, talking shop. The owner of the shop is an absolute gem and a blast to hang out with - I am so glad I met her! The other ladies I’ve met while in the shop have all been smart, funny, wonderful people, too; that shop feels like home, and I’ve only been in there a few times! I’m looking forward to seeing the community I know will develop in and around Favorite Things - crafters, independent business owners and those who come in to look and shop, but stay for the atmosphere!
I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner and editor of a local newspaper - another independent business woman! Those of us in the shop ended up sitting on the floor discussing how our businesses works, promotion and publicity, advertising and the possibility of running a public crafters swap meet. It was incredible, just getting to really talk with other women who are passionate about their business, their work, their art, their craft. I don’t feel like such an odd ball anymore, knowing that there are other women who really do love to talk shop as much as I do!
I’ll probably be heading back there once a week, not just to do restocking and inventory, but to visit and really be a part of that community that is growing! And at the request of the lovely shop owner, I’ll be bringing my wheel and some fiber (and a chair!) to spin while I’m there. It will be a much needed break from the day to day grind, and a wonderful way to promote my business and encourage people to stop and look around in the whole shop for longer than they might otherwise!
I’m really excited about it all - and there is the possibility of writing a crafting column for the local newspaper too! It’s amazing how much can happen in one day, and the power that sitting on the floor just visiting has!
